Could I do SEO faster with a small keyword set?

Client question: It seems that our key word list is small. Therefore, I think we can make significant strides by focusing our efforts around a few, but I'm open to your thoughts?

Answer: Not really. They keyword list you have in mind can be small. The keyword list you should optimize your website for may be big or small. You'd need do to a keyword research to figure that out.

For example, if your site is new and your content is little, there will be no way you can target short, lucrative keywords at the beginning, no matter how focus you are. Because your competitors are all bigger than you, more credible than you, and has more content than you. SEO is not a magic to shorten that distance in a short time.

You'd have to optimize for a lot of long-tail keywords first, get the visible rankings, drive the initial traffic, then start boosting the top keywords. That is a long progress, and it needs SEO research and strategy.
